One thing that I realized while doing my research is how many people think about music as a way to escape the troubles that they are facing while living in Kinshasa. Not only do people see music as a way to make enough money to actually leave Kinshasa, they also see music as a way to escape the struggles they are facing while they are still living in Kinshasa. There was one musician who had been trying for twenty years to become successful but even after that he didn’t give up trying.
There also were people who felt that their only way out of the slums and ghettos was through music. There was one women in a short documentary called “Jupiter’s Dance” who said “We want a better life. A much better life. I didn’t wanna become a whore, no! I chose music instead”. I think that this truly show how much people believe that music can get them a better life.
